Why We Exist

Why Avishi Center Bangalore Was Founded

Akhila S Rao did not plan to start a therapy centre. She planned to work with human minds – that pull had been there since she completed her BSc in Psychology from Christ University, Bangalore in 2011. What she did not anticipate was how completely Applied Behaviour Analysis would claim her.

Her first years were spent in the trenches. Working at established centers in Bangalore including Behavior Momentum India and Stepping Stones, she learned directly from clinical experience what effective ABA looked like and what it did not. She was not studying the field from a distance – she was delivering therapy, supervising cases, and watching children make progress that families had stopped daring to expect. The work fit like a second skin.

In 2018, autism diagnoses in Bangalore were rising steadily. Awareness was still close to zero. Therapy centres were either non-existent or so far apart that families were waiting months for assessment and travelling hours for sessions. The gap between need and provision was striking – and it was the kind of gap that only a clinician who had been inside the system could fully see.

Akhila had also reached the ceiling of what working within someone else’s structure would allow. She had ideas, clinical instincts, and a way of working that produced results. But ambition rarely fits neatly inside someone else’s policies. When she left her last position, her clients followed. That is a rare thing in any profession. It told her something important about the relationship she had built and the outcomes she had delivered.

She started with home visits. One child, one session, one hour at a time. But it became clear quickly that this could not scale. She could not be in all places at once, and the children needed consistency, structure, and a team around them. Avishi Center was not a business plan. It was a clinical necessity.

How We Work

The Avishi Center Bangalore Approach to Therapy

Avishi Center Bangalore operates on a single founding principle: no child should receive a therapy program that was not built specifically for them. That sounds obvious. In practice, very few centres in Bangalore deliver on it.

📋

Assessment Before Everything

No child at Avishi receives a therapy plan before a comprehensive 22-domain clinical assessment. We need to understand your child's full developmental profile before we can meaningfully help. There are no shortcuts here.

🤝

One Integrated Team

ABA therapists, speech therapists, and FSP educators share a clinical plan for every child. Goals do not live in silos. What is worked on in speech therapy is reinforced in ABA sessions and in the classroom.

👪

Families Are Part of the Programme

Parent training is not optional at Avishi. The most powerful lever for a child's progress is what happens in the hours between sessions. We make sure families have the tools to use those hours well.

📊

Data Drives Every Decision

Progress is tracked at every session. Programmes are reviewed quarterly and adjusted based on what the data shows, not on general impression. Stagnation is caught early and addressed directly.

Akhila S Rao is the founder and clinical lead of Avishi Center Bangalore. She began her career in ABA in 2011 and has spent over a decade working directly with autistic children and children with developmental delays, progressing from therapist to supervisor to clinical lead before founding Avishi in 2018.

She holds dual gold-standard behaviour analysis certifications – BCBA from the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and QBA from the Qualified Applied Behaviour Analysis Credentialing Board (QABA). When she earned her BCBA in 2018, she was one of fewer than five BCBAs practicing in all of India. That number has grown substantially since, and Akhila has been part of why – supervising BCBA, QBA, and RBT aspirants across the country and contributing to the professional development of the field.

In 2015, when BACB temporarily paused certifications for Indian practitioners, Akhila was among a small group of five to eight clinicians who formed a national working group to address the gap. She was instrumental in bringing awareness to the QBA pathway and facilitating the first wave of QBA certifications in India, herself being one of the early recipients.
